Youth bulge: Remarkable opportunity

The young population is uniquely positioned to drive positive change and seize new opportunities

A Unique Generation

According to youthsmarts, the young population of today is distinct from previous generations in several key ways:

  • Digital Natives They were born into a world of smartphones, social media, and instant connectivity. They can use technology to communicate, learn, and create. They can access information and opportunities on an unprecedented scale, breaking down geographical and cultural barriers.
  • Diverse and Inclusive The young population is the most diverse in history, with increasing racial, ethnic, and cultural mixing. This diversity is reflected in their values, as young people are more likely to embrace inclusivity, equality, and social justice. They are challenging traditional norms and advocating for a more equitable and inclusive society.
  • Globally Connected Thanks to the internet and social media, young people in 2024 are more connected than ever before. They can form global networks, share ideas, and collaborate across borders. This interconnectedness has fostered a sense of global citizenship, with young people increasingly concerned about global issues such as climate change, poverty, and human rights.
  • Entrepreneurial and Innovative Faced with a rapidly changing job market, many young people today are turning to entrepreneurship and innovation as a way to create their own opportunities. They are leveraging technology to start businesses, develop new products, and solve complex problems. This entrepreneurial spirit is driving economic growth and creating new industries.

While there are some who worry about the potential for youths to be a destabilizing factor, the UN Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security frames the worry in more optimistic tones: a large youth population presents a unique demographic dividend that can contribute to lasting peace and economic prosperity if inclusive policies are in place (S/RES/2250, 2015).

“No one is born a good citizen; no nation is born a democracy. Rather, both are processes that continue to evolve over a lifetime. Young people must be included from birth. A society that cuts itself off from its youth severs its lifeline; it is condemned to bleed to death.”

— Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General of the United Nations

Opportunities

The young population is uniquely positioned to drive positive change and seize new opportunities.⁵ To name a few:

  • Economic Growth and Innovation Because of their digital skills and entrepreneurial mindset, young people are at the forefront of economic growth and innovation. They are creating new businesses, developing cutting-edge technologies, and driving productivity. In developing countries, the young population represents a demographic dividend that, if harnessed effectively, can accelerate economic development and reduce poverty.
  • Social and Political Change Young people are increasingly taking an active role in shaping social and political landscapes. In many countries, young people are running for office, influencing policy, and challenging the status quo.
  • Global Collaboration The interconnectedness of the young population has facilitated global collaboration on a scale never seen before. Young people are working together across borders to address global challenges like climate change, public health, and education. Initiatives like the United Nations’ Youth2030 strategy are empowering young people to take leadership roles in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Cultural Exchange and Creativity The diversity and creativity of the young population are enriching global culture. Through music, art, literature, and film, young people are sharing their stories and perspectives, fostering greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures. This cultural exchange is breaking down stereotypes and building bridges between communities.
